Outdoor living on Geneva Lake
Almost nobody sets out wanting a patio. What they want is somewhere to put twelve people on a Saturday evening in August, with something cooking and somewhere to sit when the light goes. The paving is how that gets built, and the part of it that decides whether it is still level in fifteen years happens below ground, before a single stone is laid.
What we build
How it works
Three steps, then it is your decision.
1. Describe the project
A few answers about what you want to build, the ground it sits on, and roughly when. Nothing else is needed to begin.
2. Walk the site
A local licensed and insured contractor reads the slope, the access and the drainage, and talks through materials in daylight rather than from a sample board.
3. Receive drawings and a figure
Layout, materials, the order the work happens in, and what it comes to - set down in writing for this specific garden.
Excavation here is bounded by frost at one end and by everyone else at the other. Work that starts in spring was generally agreed the previous autumn.
Natural stone or concrete paver
They do not age the same way.
Both are good surfaces and both are widely used here. The difference that matters is not appearance on the day it is finished - it is how each one looks and behaves after fifteen Wisconsin winters.
Concrete paver
- Consistent unit size, which makes large areas straightforward
- Any single unit can be lifted and reset
- Replacements are matchable while the range is current
- Colour is a surface treatment and softens with exposure
Natural stone
- Colour runs through the stone rather than sitting on it
- Weathers rather than fades - most people prefer it at ten years
- Variation in thickness makes the base work more demanding
- Matching a replacement later depends on the quarry run

Straight answer
Sometimes the honest answer is a smaller project.
Access, slope, drainage and setbacks rule out a fair number of layouts on this shoreline, and several more should be scaled down rather than squeezed in. That gets said while we are standing on the ground together, long before anyone signs anything.
When to spend less, not morePlanning tools
Sketch it roughly before anyone visits.
Neither of these asks for your details, and neither shows a figure. They exist to make the first conversation shorter.
How big a terrace will fit?
Measure the flat ground you have and this suggests terrace sizes that suit it.

What owners say
Nothing here yet, deliberately.
Filling this section with stock praise would be easy and worthless. It stays empty until there is permissioned feedback from named clients to put in it. Ask and we will arrange for you to speak to one directly.

Questions, answered
Lake Geneva hardscaping questions.
What does a hardscaping contractor actually build?
The permanent, built parts of a garden: paved terraces, walkways, steps, retaining walls, outdoor kitchens and fire features. On this lake it also means the groundwork nobody sees - excavation, base, compaction and drainage - which is what separates a terrace that is still flat in fifteen winters from one that is not.
Can I put a terrace or a wall close to the lake?
Generally not within the shore yard. Walworth County shoreland zoning names patios and retaining walls among the structures prohibited within 75 feet of the ordinary high water mark, and grade changes near the water are generally not authorised at all. On a lakefront lot that decides the layout before any design question does.
Natural stone or concrete pavers?
They age very differently, which matters more than how they look on day one. Natural stone weathers and holds its colour; concrete pavers are consistent, easier to match when a unit needs replacing, and generally more forgiving on a large area. The right answer depends on the house, the exposure and how the surface will be used.
Do you work on properties the owner only visits at weekends?
Regularly - it is most of the work here. It changes project management more than construction: decisions get grouped so several can be made in one visit, progress is documented in between, and material choices lean toward finishes that tolerate being left alone for five days a week.
What areas do you cover?
Lake Geneva and the Walworth County communities around Geneva Lake and Delavan Lake - Williams Bay, Fontana, Delavan, Elkhorn, Walworth and Genoa City - plus the smaller villages inland. Send the quiz if you are unsure whether your property is in range and we will confirm.
Do you repair existing work as well as build new?
Yes, and it is worth asking early. A terrace that has settled or heaved is usually reporting a base or drainage problem underneath it, and resetting the surface without addressing that buys a couple of seasons. We will tell you which one you are facing before any work is agreed.
